Matrix metalloproteinase-9 and vascular endothelial growth factor expression change in experimental retinal neovascularization

Yu Di, Qing-Zhu Nie, Xiao-Long Chen

This paper discusses the signal transduction mechanism of matrix metalloproteinase-9-vascular endothelial growth factor expression and retinal neovascularization in oxygen-induced retinopathy model. The result demonstrates that tissue inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinase-1 may be a potential target for the prevention and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity.

Endothelial nitric oxide synthase deficiency influences normal cell cycle progression and apoptosis in trabecular meshwork cells

Qiong Liao, Yan-Ming Huang, Wei Fan, Chan Li, Hong Yang

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of visual loss. Increased fluid pressure within the eyeball is a well-known risk factor for the development of glaucoma. Trabecular meshwork is involved in outflow of aqueous humour and regulating intraocular pressure. This study clarified how the endothelial nitric oxide synthase (NOS3) make effect on the trabecular meshwork by RNAi-mediated gene silencing in vitro. The authors conclude that abnormal NOS3 expression can make effect on the proteins levels of extracellular matrix component (e.g. fibronectin 1 and Type Collagen). Reduced NOS3 restrained the trabecular meshwork cell cycle progression at the G2/M-phase transition and induced cell apoptosis. This conclusion will provide basic experimental data for the treatment of glaucoma.

Orbital decompression surgery and horse chestnut seed extract improved superior orbital vein blood flow in patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy

Yu-Jie Wu, Xin Wei, Man-Yi Xiao, Wei Xiong

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of orbital decompression with or without horse chestnut seed extract on improvement of superior orbital vein blood flow parameters measured by color Doppler flow imaging, subjective assessment (symptoms), soft tissue involvement, lid retraction, diplopia, eye movement restriction, degree of exophthalmos, and intraocular pressure by complete ophthalmic examinations in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy patients before and after treatment.

Long-term outcomes of wedge resection at the limbus for high irregular corneal astigmatism after repaired corneal laceration

Jun Du, Guang-Ying Zheng, Cheng-Lin Wen, Xiao-Fang Zhang, Yu Zhu

The authors reported at the first time that wedge resection at corneal limbus was performed for correction of high irregular astigmatism in patients with traumatic corneal scarring. Major findings suggested corneal-scleral limbal wedge resection with compression suture is a safe, effective treatment for poor patients with high irregular corneal astigmatism after corneal-scleral penetrating injury.

Surgical management of fungal endophthalmitis resulting from fungal keratitis

Yan Gao, Nan Chen, Xiao-Guang Dong, Gong-Qiang Yuan, Bin Yu, Li-Xin Xie

Authors believe that surgical treatment also plays an irreplaceable role in infection control, especially in severe cases of exogenous fungal endophthalmitis resulting from keratitis. This study evaluated the microbiology, clinical features, surgical strategies, and outcomes in a series of cases of exogenous fungal endophthalmitis secondary to keratitis. Aggressive antifungal surgeries including multiple intravitreal injections, PKP and core vitrectomy are greatly beneficial in salvaging eyes with severe exogenous fungal endophthalmitis.
