Gastrodin protects retinal ganglion cells through inhibiting microglial-mediated neuroinflammation in an acute ocular hypertension model

Jia-wei Wang, Yao-ming Liu, Xiao-fei Zhao, Xiu-lan Zhang, Han zhang

2017;10(10):1483-1489   DOI:10.18240/ijo.2017.10.01

Recommended reasonThis study elucidate the influence of gastrodin on the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) survival in an acute ocular hypertension (AOH) rat model, and further investigated its possible mechanism. The finding demonstrates the potential application of gastrodin in the neuroprotective therapy of acute glaucoma and other retinal neurodegenerative diseases characterized by microglia activation and RGCs death.

2017;10(10):1495-1503  DOI:10.18240/ijo.2017.10.03

Recommended reasonThis paper investigates the effects of hydrogen-rich saline on microglia activation and Sirtuin type 1 (Sirt1) in rats with N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU)-induced retinitis pigmentosa. Hydrogen-rich saline can effectively keep microglia activation induced by MNU to an appropriate extent, while upregulate Sirt1 in MNU-induced retinitis pigmentosa.

This study investigates the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) and parafoveal vessel densities (PRVD) by means of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in diabetic patients with or without diabetic retinopathy (DR) and draws a conclusion that OCTA shows progressive increase of FAZ area and reduction of PRVD in both superficial and deep plexus at increasing DR severity. FAZ area and PRVD measurements using OCTA are highly reproducible.

Evaluation of refractive correction for standard automated perimetry in eyes wearing multifocal contact lenses

2017;10(10):1559-1565   DOI:10.18240/ijo.2017.10.13

Optimal refractive correction is important in patients with glaucoma, as it is thought that decreasing sensitivity induced by inadequate refractive correction influences the estimate of visual field progression. The study evaluated the refractive correction required for standard automated perimetry testing (SAP) in eyes with multifocal contact lenses. The results indicate that, when the dome-shaped visual field test is administered in eyes with large pupils and wearing refractive multifocal contact lenses, distance correction without additional near correction is required.
