Cross-talk between microRNA-let7c and transforming growth factor-β2 during epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition of retinal pigment epithelial cells

This study aims to explore the roles of microRNA-let7c (miR-let7c) and transforming growth factor-β2 (TGF-β2) and cellular signaling during epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. Based on previous researches, the authors demonstrated human RPE cells undergoing EMT is a key event in the pathogenesis of epiretinal membrane (ERM). And miR-let7c plays an important role in inhibiting TGF-β2-induced EMT, and this inhibitory effect might be regulated by the NF-κB signaling pathway. These findings could aid in exploring new molecular mechanisms of ERM and in the development of novel strategies for the prevention or treatment of proliferative vitreoretinopathy.

Optical coherence tomography angiography of the peripapillary region and macula in normal, primary open-angle glaucoma, pseudoexfoliation glaucoma and ocular hypertension eyes

This study evaluated and compared the peripapillary and retinal vasculature changes in primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXG), ocular hypertension (OHT) and normal eyes using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). The results show OCTA can measure reduced peripapillary and macular VD in eyes with glaucoma and OHT, and these results are correlated to functional and structural glaucomatous alterations. Peripapillary and macular superficial plexus VD is lower in eyes with PXG than in eyes with POAG. Furthermore, the OHT eyes demonstrate impaired macular vasculature in both superficial and deep plexus.

Analysis of choroidal morphology and comparison of imaging ?ndings of subtypes of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy: a new classification system

This study aims to classify polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) into 2 subtypes based on the subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and to further explore their differences of multi-model imaging characteristics. The retrospective observational case series study shows that the 225 μm subfoveal choroidal thickness is taken as the cutoff point for the following classification of thick/thin choroid groups. Significant different image features between the thick and thin choroid groups are found, which verified the scientificity, both in statistical and ophthalmic perspectives.
