Choroidal changes in eyes treated with high-dose systemic corticosteroids for optic neuritis

By enrolling unilateral optic neuritis, which accounts for most of the optic neuritis cases, and by comparing affected and fellow eyes, the study demonstrates the effects of systemic high-dose corticosteroid on choroidal morphology as well as the effect of the disease itself. A significant decrement in choroidal thickness (CT) and choroidal vascularity index (CVI) can appear after 3mo in optic neuritis patients treated with high-dose systemic corticosteroid treatment. The decrease in CVI appeared earlier than the decrease in CT, suggesting choroidal vasoconstriction caused by systemic steroid as a possible mechanism.

Umbilical cord derived mesenchymal stem cell implantation in retinitis pigmentosa: a 6-month follow-up results of a phase 3 trial

This study aims to investigate the efficacy and the safety of umbilical cord derived mesenchymal stem cell (UC-MSC) implantation in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). This prospective, single-center, phase 3 clinical study enrolled 124 eyes of 82 RP patients. Ths results show that suprachoroidal administration of UC-MSCs has beneficial effect on BCVA, VF, and mfERG measurements during the 6-month follow-up period. Cell mediated therapy based on the secretion of growth factors (GFs) seems to be an effective and safe option for degenerative retinal diseases.

A new visual acuity test on touchpad for vision screening in children

This study validated a visual acuity (VA) test application on touchpad in the screening of pediatric population by comparing VA results obtained with conventional tests. The results showed touchpad application represents an efficient and valid test of VA in children with a high specificity to detect visual impairment. The use of the application could be expanded to public and allow families to perform VA tests at home as a pre-diagnosis tool. According to the results of the test, a message could be delivered informing about the need or not to seek for an ophthalmologist.

Effects of primary glaucoma on sleep quality and daytime sleepiness of patients residing at an equatorial latitude

The authors reported on the incidence of sleep disturbances amongst patients with primary glaucoma in the South-East Asian population. Recent studies have noted an association between poor sleep quality with severity of primary glaucoma and in this study, they added to the current paucity of literature amongst the Asian population. Despite being in an equatorial region with constant sunlight throughout the year, they found that patients with primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) had sleep disturbances with poor sleep quality which could be related to disturbance of their circadian rhythm.
