Therapeutic effect of secretome from TNF-α stimulated mesenchymal stem cells in an experimental model of corneal limbal stem cell deficiency

This study aims to explore the secretome efficacy in tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α stimulated mouse mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in a murine model of corneal limbal alkali injury. The therapeutic effects of topical application of concentrated conditioned medium from TNF-α stimulated MSCs (MSC-CMT) in an alkali-induced corneal limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) model were evaluated, and the possible underlying molecular mechanisms was studied. The study results revealed that MSC-CMT topical application alleviated the clinical symptoms of experimental LSCD, partially through TSG-6-dependent mechanisms.

Effect of luteolin on apoptosis and vascular endothelial growth factor in human choroidal melanoma cells

Traditional Chinese medicine has attracted much attention in recent years for its anti-tumor effects such as inducing tumor cell apoptosis and blocking cell cycle. This study investigated the effects of luteolin on the morphology, apoptosis, cell cycle, VEGF level of human choroidal melanoma cells C918 and OCM-1. Result showed that luteolin may induce apoptosis by regulating the levels of apoptosis related pathway proteins in C918 cells and OCM-1 cells. Luteolin can induce cell cycle arrest, decrease the expression of VEGF. The research provides the cell experimental basis for the application of luteolin in the treatment of human choroidal melanoma.

Surgical correction of recurrent epiblepharon in Chinese children using modified skin re-draping epicanthoplasty

The study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of the modified skin re-draping epicanthoplasty procedure for correction of recurrent lower lid epiblepharon in Chinese children. Congenital epiblepharon is one of the common eyelid anomalies among orient children. The researchers describe a surgical technique to correct recurrent epiblepharon and its clinical results. The study confirmed that this surgical modified skin re-draping technique is effective and highly satisfactory for correction of recurrent epiblepharon. The approach is characterized by a simple design, a straightforward procedure, inconspicuous scarring, and good postoperative appearance.

Analysis of the etiologies, treatments and prognoses in children and adolescent vitreous hemorrhage

Vitreous hemorrhage (VH) was one of the serious blinding diseases. The etiology is complicated and diverse. The incidence rate of vitreous hemorrhage in children was much higher than that of adults, but previous research was often rarely. Totally 262 eyes of 210 cases (18y) with VH was collected to determine the etiologies, treatment modalities and visual outcomes. Compared with previous studies, the mean age at diagnosis (1y) in this study was the youngest one; the sum of spontaneous vitreous hemorrhage was the largest one; all patients were also divided into 6 subgroups, in accordance to physiological and psychological development rather than equidistant age. Retinopathy of prematurity was the primary cause of VH in children and adolescent. In contrast with spontaneous VH, visual acuity was obvious improved after appropriate treatment in traumatic VH. Initial visual acuity was most important predictor for visual outcome.
