Therapeutic effect of a traditional Chinese medicine formulation on experimental choroidal neovascularization in mouse

The study aims to investigate therapeutic effects of traditional Chinese medicine formulations, Hexuemingmu (HXMM) on laser-induced choroidal neovascularization (CNV) and follow-up effect in mice. The electroretinogram, fundus fluorescence angiography, choroidal flat mount, and immunofluorescence staining were preformed to evaluate the function and CNV formation. The study confirmed that HXMM has a specific therapeutic effect on CNV in animal experiments. Its effect was mainly mediated by protecting the function of retinal cells, promoting the absorption of inflammatory exudation, and reducing the expression of related proteins. The results provide a new reference for the treatment of CNV-related diseases.

Protective effect of LIF-huMSCs on the retina of diabetic model rats

This study investigated the protective effect of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs) modified by the LIF gene on the retinal function of diabetic model rats and preliminarily explore the possible mechanism. The results showed that an intravitreal injection of hUCMSCs, especially LIF-hUCMSCs, increased the levels of adiponectin (APN) and neurotrophin-4 (NT-4) and reduced the production of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). These findings suggest that hUCMSCs can improve retinal function in diabetic rats through immunomodulation and neurotrophic effects. The improvement is more obvious for LIF-hUCMSCs.

Association of peripheral anterior synechia, intraocular pressure, and glaucomatous optic neuropathy in primary angle closure diseases

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. This study aims to determine the association of peripheral anterior synechia (PAS) with raised intraocular pressure (IOP) and the prevalence of glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON) in primary angle closure (PAC) disease. Totally 355 eyes of 181 patients were included in this analysis from a randomized clinical trial. The results indicate that PAS is linearly associated with the probability of GON and is of great clinical significance. Besides, the extent of PAS is an important predictor of higher IOP. In conclusion, PAS was significantly associated with IOP and GON in PAC diseases.

Vitreous function and intervention of it with vitrectomy and other modalities

The vitreous gel is the largest component structure of the eye and plays a key role in eye development, refraction, cell barrier, oxygen metabolism and retinal pathogenesis. However, intravitreal injections and vitrectomy have been widely used, sometimes overdone, and severely interfere with its structure and function. In the review, the function and oxygen metabolism of vitreous gel and intervention of it with vitrectomy and other modalities were emphasized, particularly the lens and trabecular meshwork from oxidative stress damage after vitrectomy and extraocular procedures for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) in order to avoid vitreous intervention.
