Protective limb remote ischemic post-conditioning against high-intraocular-pressure-induced retinal injury in mice

The study was focused on the effects of remote limb ischemic post-conditioning (LRIC) on high IOP induced retinal injury in mice. The results suggested that LRIC treatment has retinal protective effects against high IOP injury. The endogenous humoral factors released into circulation by LRIC may contribute the protection by reduce the monocytes infiltration and/or microglia activation.

CCPG1 involved in corneal Aspergillus fumigatus infection

This study investigated whether non-canonical autophagy transport receptor cell cycle progression 1 (CCPG1) is involved in the corneal antifungal immune response. The results showed the expression of CCPG1 started to increase at 4h after infection and increased in a time-dependent manner in human corneal epithelial cells (HCECs) and human myeloid leukemia mononuclear cells (THP-1) macrophages. CCPG1 up-regulation in response to Aspergillus fumigatus (A. fumigatus) infection was independent of Dectin-1. Immunofluorescence showed the colocalization of CCPG1 and C-type lectin-like receptor-1 (CLEC-1) in THP-1 macrophages. As a specific autophagy protein of non-canonical autophagy pathway, CCPG1 is involved in corneal infection with A. fumigatus.

Preoperative laser reduces silicone oil use in primary diabetic vitrectomy

Due to the aging population and the increasing prevalence of diabetes, the number of people suffering vision-threatening proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) has significantly increased in recent years. Vitrectomy has been established as the ultimate treatment of severe PDR related complications and silicone oil has been used as an effective endotamponade agent that increases the success rate of complicated cases undergoing vitrectomy. In this study, 690 patients (798 eyes) who underwent primary diabetic vitrectomy at a tertiary eye hospital in China from January 2018 to December 2018 were reviewed. The binary logistic regression model was used to evaluate the risk factors for the use of silicone oil as endotamponade agent during primary vitrectomy for PDR-related complications. It turns out that lack of preoperative laser treatment were predictors of silicone oil tamponade during primary vitrectomy for PDR. The results are essential for retinal surgeons when formulating a surgical plan for PDR patients.

One-year outcomes and predictable factors for microhook ab interno trabeculotomy

This study aimed to investigate the factors and short-term outcomes influencing the surgical results of microhook ab interno trabeculotomy (μLOT). This study was conducted based on the limited knowledge on the surgical outcomes of μLOT. The 59 eyes of 59 patients comprising 28 eyes with primary open angle glaucoma and 31 with secondary open angle glaucoma were included and retrospectively reviewed, and the rate of surgical success was evaluated. This study shows that μLOT is a good treatment, predominantly for primary open angle glaucoma.
