Effect of light-emitting diodes with different color rendering indexes on the ocular tissues of rat

This study aims to compare the damage of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with different color rendering indexes (CRIs) to the ocular surface and retina of rats. Rats were exposed to three LEDs with different CRIs to observe dry eye indicators, lacrimal gland and retinal pathological changes. The protein expression levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the lacrimal gland were assessed via immunofluorescence. The results show that LED exposure for 4wk can cause the pathological changes of lacrimal gland and retina of rats, and increase the expression of TNF-α and IL-6 in lacrimal gland, the degree of damage is negatively correlated with the CRI.

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders and anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein positive optic neuropathies

This study is a cross-sectional single-center retrospective case series consisting of 16 patients including 12 anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) positive patients and 4 anti-aquaporin 4 (AQP4) positive patients. Structured clinical exam and multimodal imaging was undertaken sequentially on each. The result indicates that no correlation between initial visual acuity (VA) or retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and final visual outcome is identified. A consensus on treatment of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders and anti-MOG positive optic neuropathies has yet to be accepted but initial high dose immunosuppression followed by low dose maintenance therapy is favored. In conclusion, the study has shown the range of clinical characteristics that can be associated with both anti-MOG and anti-AQP4 optic neuropathies. The prompt diagnosis and treatment of these disease is essential to prevent long term ocular sequalae.

Relative peripheral refraction and its role in myopia onset in teenage students

The study was a longitudinal cohort study, which recruited non-myopic junior high school graduates aged 14–16 years from different regions of the country. The study aimed to characterize peripheral refraction and its relationship with incident myopia in teenage Chinese students. Authors found that the incidence of myopia at the 2-year follow-up was 15.29%, and that relative peripheral hyperopia did not predict myopia development in teenage students but was nonetheless higher in students who developed myopia than in those who did not.

Short-term effect of 0.01% atropine sulphate eye gel on myopia progression in children

This study investigated the effect of 0.01% atropine sulphate eye gel on myopia progression and axial elongation in a six-month treatment in children. This study comprised an atropine group and a control group. Patients in the atropine group received one drop of 0.01% atropine sulphate eye gel in each eye before bedtime daily for 6mo. The control group comprised matched children without drug intervention during the same period. After 6mo, there was significantly difference in the spherical equivalent progression between the atropine and the control group, with a relative reduction of 55.0% in myopia progression. The increase in axial elongation in the atropine group was significantly less than control group. The results shows atropine sulphate eye gel 0.01% can slow down myopia progression and axial elongation in children with a 6-month treatment.
