Anti-inflammatory effects of α-humulene and β-caryophyllene on pterygium fibroblasts

Brazil is a country of great biodiversity and with a high prevalence of pterygium, a frequent lesion in the tropical and equatorial regions of our planet. The aim of the study is to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of the sesquiterpenes α-humulene and β-caryophyllene on pterygium fibroblasts. The exposure to 25 μmol/L of β-caryophyllene significantly reduce the production of IL-6 by pterygium fibroblasts after 48h. The levels of IL-1β, IL-8, IL-10 and TNF-α were very low and had no statistically significant variations after exposure to α-humulene, β-caryophyllene, or both compounds together. This study shows that this herbal medicine can interfere on interleukins production.

Nanopore techniques as a potent tool in the diagnosis and treatment of endophthalmitis: a literature review

Endophthalmitis is a serious ophthalmic disease characterized by changes in the eye’s posterior segment, such as hypopyon and intraocular inflammation, vitritis being a hallmark. This article introduced the current research status of molecular sequencing in endophthalmitis and discussed exciting development in sequencing technology. Despite the challenges, we believe that nanopore-targeted sequencing has greatly contributed to the progress of genomics in the field of endophthalmitis and that this is the way forward for research. It is likely that we will see an increasing number of clinical trials testing combinations of technologies, probing potential mechanisms, and collaborating to drive progression in the diagnosis and treatment of endophthalmitis.

A simple technique for suprachoroidal space injection of triamcinolone acetonide in treatment of macular edema

This study aims to introduce a simple resistance controlled suprachoroidal space injection technique using a disposable 30-gauge needle connected to a 1 mL syringe and evaluate the effectiveness and applicability of this technique in the treatment of macular edema. A total of 20 patients with various types of macular edema were included and the main outcome measures were anterior segment spectral-domain optical coherence tomography measurements post-operation immediately and central subfield thickness, best-corrected visual acuity, and intraocular pressure measurements at 3mo post-operation. The results show that this easy and minimally invasive technique of is effective and applicable for macular edema and could be explored as a suitable alternative to intravitreal injection.
