Visual perception alterations in COVID-19: a preliminary study

María Begoña Coco-Martín, Luis Leal-Vega, Irene Alcoceba-Herrero, Ainhoa Molina-Martín, Dolores de-Fez, María José Luque, Carlos Dueñas-Gutiérrez, Juan Francisco Arenillas-Lara, David P. Piñero

This study compared the visual perception (color and chromatic-achromatic contrast vision) of a small cohort of COVID-19 patients at the time of infection and after 6mo with that of a healthy population matched for sex and age. A total of 25 patients (9 females, 16 males, mean age: 54±10y) with COVID-19 hospitalized were recruited for this preliminary study. Visual perception, as determined by monocular measurement of contrast sensitivity function (CSF) and color vision was assessed in each patient using the Optopad test. The evidence show that visual perception may be impaired in COVID-19, even when the infection has passed. Although further research is needed to determine the precise causes of this finding, analysis of CSF and color vision could provide valuable information on the visual impact of COVID-19.

Intravitreal slow-release dexamethasone alleviates traumatic proliferative vitreoretinopathy by inhibiting persistent inflammation and Müller cell gliosis in rabbits

Yi-Ming Zhao, Rong-Sha Sun, Fang Duan, Fang-Yu Wang, Yu-Jie Li, Xiao-Bing Qian, Jie-Ting Zeng, Yao Yang, Xiao-Feng Lin

This study aims to evaluate the effects of intravitreal slow-release dexamethasone (Ozurdex) on traumatic proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) and Müller cell gliosis and preliminarily explored the possible inflammatory mechanism in a rabbit model induced by penetrating ocular trauma. The findings confirmed the beneficial effect of Ozurdex on traumatic PVR by inhibiting the chronic inflammation response and Müller cell gliosis in rabbits after penetrating ocular injury. In summary, Ozurdex provides a potential therapeutic option for traumatic PVR.

Comparison of success rate and intraocular pressure spikes between selective laser trabeculoplasty and micropulse laser trabeculoplasty in African American and Hispanic patients

Alexander Z Robin, Palwasha Syar, Dana Darwish, Catherine Thomas, N.M. Pfahler, Agni Kakouri, Thomas Patrianakos, Michael Giovingo

Laser trabeculoplasty (LT) is a mainstay of treatment for the management of open-angle glaucoma (OAG). The aim of this study is to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of micropulse laser trabeculoplasty (MLT) in a large cohort that is more representative of the demographic of patients with OAGs. MLT has a significantly lower incidence of pressure spikes and a similar treatment failure rate at 1-year post-procedure, demonstrating that it is a reasonable alternative compared to selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT).
