Long-term efficacy and safety of YAG laser vitreolysis for vision degrading myodesopsia

This retrospective study reviewed vision degrading myodesopsia (VDM) patients of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) type undergoing YAG laser vitreolysis. The final analysis included 221 patients with VDM. Totally 57.01% of patients experienced a significant improvement in their floater symptoms after YAG laser therapy, and none of them developed delayed retinal abnormalities such as retinal tears or detachments. YAG laser vitreolysis is an effective and secure treatment for PVD-type VDM, and patients of advanced age are more likely to get favorable outcomes.

Axial length and anterior chamber indices in elderly population: Tehran Geriatric Eye Study

Considering the high prevalence of ocular problems in the elderly population, especially cataract and glaucoma, evaluation of ocular parameters is of special importance in this age group. The study aims to determine the normative distribution of axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), anterior chamber volume (ACV), and anterior chamber angle (ACA) and some of their associated factors in subjects aged 60 and over. In conclusion, normative value of AL, and other biometric parameters are specific for each ethnicity, age and sex group. Any alteration in these parameters and their effect on refraction should be considered in this age group, especially in case of cataract surgery.

Therapeutic potential of iron chelators in retinal vascular diseases

The occurrence of iron overload in the retina leads to the generation of a significant quantity of reactive oxygen species. This will aggravate local oxidative stress and inflammatory reactions and even lead to ferroptosis, eventually resulting in retinal dysfunction. Recently, iron-chelating agents have been found to have antioxidative and anti-inflammatory actions. Therefore, iron neutralization is considered to be a new and potentially useful therapeutic strategy. This article reviews the iron overload in retinal vascular diseases and discusses the therapeutic potential of iron-chelating agents.
