Electroacupuncture alleviates ciliary muscle cell apoptosis in lens-induced myopic guinea pigs through inhibiting the mitochondrial signaling pathway

This study aims to explore the role of the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway mediated by dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1) in the ciliary muscle of guinea pigs with lens-induced myopia, investigated the effect of electroacupuncture on the development of myopia, clarified whether electroacupuncture can improve the function of ciliary muscles to inhibit the development of myopia by affecting the mitochondrial apoptotic signaling pathway. The findings show that the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway of the ciliary muscle is activated in experimental myopia and electroacupuncture intervention can reduce cell apoptosis and restore the physiological function of the ciliary muscle, providing new insights for the treatment of myopia with electroacupuncture.

Agreements’ profile of Scheimpflug-based optical biometer with gold standard partial coherence interferometry

Ocular biometric measurements are of great importance in ophthalmic studies as well as clinical practice. These measurements are used for the intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation before cataract surgery, screening of refractive surgery candidates, diagnosing and monitoring primary angle-closure glaucoma, and monitoring the progression of ametropia. To determine the agreement of ocular biometric indices including axial length, keratometric readings, anterior chamber depth, and horizontal corneal diameter between the Pentacam AXL and IOL Master 500. In conclusion, the Pentacam AXL has excellent agreement with the gold standard, IOL Master 500 in measuring axial length. In eyes with cataracts, the difference between the two devices is more scattered. With the increasing of axial length, the difference between the two devices increased, which should be considered when using Pentacam AXL.

Optical coherence tomography angiography for macular microvessels in ischemic branch retinal vein occlusion treated with conbercept: predictive factors for the prognosis

This study evaluate the predicative factors of visual prognosis using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in ischemic branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) patients with macular edema (ME) after anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment. Totally 60 patients (60 eyes) with a definite diagnosis of ischemic BRVO with ME were studied. The results showed all patients showed significant improvement in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA). The mean central macular thickness (CMT) significantly decreased. Both the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area and A-circularity index (AI) at 6mo were significantly higher than those at the baseline. Using OCTA to observe macular ischemia and quantify parameters can better predict the final visual prognosis of patients before treatment. The changes in FAZ parameters may influence the visual prognosis and injection times.
